The effect of your URL structure on your Google rankings

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Does Google care about the position of a web page on your server? Does it make a difference if a web page is in the root directory of your website or in a sub directory? How does your URL structure influence the position of your web pages in Google’s search results?

Trailing slashes and sub directories

A popular assumption is that Google prefers pages that are in the root directory of a website.

If an URL contains many trailing slashes (meaning the page is placed in a sub-sub-directory) then Google might not think that the page is important in relation to the other pages.

Although this statement is often repeated in SEO forums, it is probably not true.

The visibility of a web page counts, not its position

If a web page is linked throughout your website and if the page has inbound links then the web page will be indexed and ranked by Google without any problems. (more…)

Bullshit legal threats for online identity management

Crop of 'My Cyber Social Map' by <a href=

It seems that people are beginning to realize that what they say, or what is said about them, online, could actually matter. More so, if it shows up on Google. Which is exactly what happened to a certain individual, who was recently looking up his own name, and found something he did not like. A forum post, from 2004.

“I found said post as hit #7. The absurd comments contained within could be classified as nothing other than slanderous, if not criminal. My name is not one that is common so I am taking these accusations personally and I ask that they are removed immediately so that further action is not required.” (more…)

Apple: We Didn’t Block Google Voice App, Still Studying It (AAPL, GOOG)

apple

Apple, too, has replied to the FCC, which wants to know why the Google Voice app is not allowed on the iPhone.

In a lengthy statement, Apple says it has not actually “blocked” the app, as TechCrunch had initially reported. Instead, it “continues to study it” and “its potential impact on the iPhone user experience.”

Apple says it has not yet approved the app because it “appears to alter the iPhone’s distinctive user experience by replacing the iPhone’s core mobile telephone functionality.”

This sounds mostly like Apple just doesn’t want iPhone owners using a Google service instead of an Apple service. This is fair in the sense that it’s Apple’s phone, and ultimately, it calls the shots. There can’t be anyone who hasn’t figured that out by now.

But whether or not it’s in Apple’s customers’ best interests for the company to block useful services like Google Voice — for silly reasons like it “appears to alter” the iPhone’s UI — well, that’s a different story.

Earlier, AT&T said it had nothing to do with the situation. (more…)
